Spreading the Word about Santos – Door-to-Door
Opening the package of Brazil Bourbon Santos from Coffee Wholesale USA unleashed a whiff of mouth-watering aroma. As I ground the coffee the irresistible bouquet brought back memories of the door-to-door coffee peddlers who sold my fathers Brazilian coffees during the Depression years of the 1930's.
With a large unemployed population there weren’t many coffee buyers during the Depression years. Moreover, the price of green coffee beans dropped drastically during that time. Since fewer customers were coming to him, my father ventured to bring his coffee to the customer.
He hired many of his unemployed friends and neighbors to make "rounds" selling his products. Most of my father’s peddlers went door-to-door within "The City", but a few more energetic individuals would take a trolley to the outlying neighborhoods to sell my father's savory Brazilian coffee.
During the holidays, in addition to coffee, the door-to-door folks took orders for such ethnic foods as braids of Turkish dates, Greek figs, and for the Italian customers strands of dried ceci beans and lumps of citron.
I recall a woman family friend who carried her coffee and spices around in a baby carriage. Later she expanded her business and began selling linens that the women purchased for their daughters trousseaus.
Interestingly, due to the fierce competition from other peddlers, premium coupons were given with each pound of coffee purchased. And accumulated coupons were later redeemed for household and kitchen goods.
All good memories come to an end, and the outbreak of war in 1941 put an end to the Great Depression. The resulting jobs for the war effort, the Draft and coffee rationing put an end to Dad's coffee peddlers.
The World's Largest Coffee Producer – Many Say The Best
Brazil is a vast republic in South America – larger than the continental United States of America – and borders every South American country except Chile. Brazil is know for coffee. After all, Brazil produces more coffee than any other country in the world. Luckily for us, most of Brazil’s tasty coffee is sent right here to the United States.
Brazil grows many varieties of coffee, but the finest is Brazil Bourbon Santos. This coffee’s name is historical in itself. In the 18th century the coffee was brought to an island known as Bourbon – now the island of Reunion. The other part of this coffee’s name comes from "Porto de Santos", the principal shipping port for this descendant of the original Bourbon strain of arabica coffee beans.
Coffee is appreciated globally, but nowhere is coffee as important to daily life as in Brazil. The Brazilians drink coffee from small demitasse cups almost constantly. Housewives customarily greet guests with a steamy cup, and it is unheard of for government or private businesses to not have coffee brewed for their employees throughout the day.

Decisions! Decisions! With coffee, I mean business – so I think I will pick out Brazil Bourbon Santos for my next order from Coffee Wholesale USA.
